Paul joined the Sherdley Park Team in July 2020. He has constructed new golf courses and improved existing all over Europe, most recently changing features of the Marco Simeone Golf Course in Rome ready for the 2023 Ryder Cup Matches. Paul is very keen to introduce a ‘hybrid’ bunker design to Sherdley Park Golf Club after recently installing them at the ‘New Course’ at Les Bordes Golf Club in France. He has worked with golf course architect Andrew Craven, International Golf Design to feature hybrid bunkers on holes 14 – 17. Paul has already installed 2 new hybrid bunkers on the existing 18th Hole (currently playing as 15th) for you to see the finished product and to be able to practice getting out of them for when they are a prominent feature across Sherdley Park Golf Course.
View from Green to Tee. The 2 new hybrid fairway bunkers are located 330 yards from the back tees and 115 yards from the green.
Taken from the first of the 2 new hybrid fairway bunkers that protect the approach to this challenging uphill par 4, with a deep green side bunker in view on the right hand side. This picture also shows the later stages of hybrid bunker construction. Turf is laid to overhang the revetted face of the bunker, growth is established and the new turf is then cut to shape the top edge of the bunker giving a sharp and defined look.
Each bunker has its own drainage system to ensure water moves away from the surface quickly and runs into the woodland to the left of the hole.
Hybrid bunker design allows the golf ball to run back into the middle of the sand trap but then presents a steep face of revetted turf for the golfer to negotiate their way over.
